How much sod do I need?
Measure the area in square feet and add 5–15% for cuts. A pallet covers 400–500 square feet depending on the farm, so a 1,500 sq ft lawn takes about 3.5 pallets — which in practice means 4, because nobody sells you half a pallet at the full-pallet rate.
Break irregular lawns into rectangles, triangles and circles and add them up. Do not measure the longest and widest points and multiply; on any lawn with a curved bed that over-reads by 15–20%, and sod you do not use is money on the driveway.
Worked example: a 50 ft × 30 ft yard is 1,500 sq ft. Deduct a 120 sq ft patio and you have 1,380. Add 8% for cutting around the bed edges and you need 1,490 sq ft — 559 slabs, or 4 pallets at 450 sq ft each.
How the calculation works
Square feet = length × width, minus anything inside that boundary which is not getting grass. For a circle it is π × (diameter ÷ 2)²; for a triangle, half the base times the height.
Pallet coverage is the number that varies most and the one suppliers are vaguest about. Slab pallets commonly run 450 square feet in the north and 500 in the south, but 400 and 600 both exist. A 50-square-foot error per pallet is a whole pallet across a big lawn, so confirm it before you place the order.
Waste depends entirely on edges, not on area. A plain rectangle wastes about 5%. A lawn with curved beds, a tree ring and a path through it wastes 12–15%, because every curve means cutting a slab and binning the offcut.
Ground prep is part of the order. Sod needs 4 inches of loose screened topsoil under it to root into — that is 1 cubic yard per 81 square feet. Laying sod on compacted builder clay is why it goes brown in three weeks and lifts like a carpet.

Installed cost lands around $1.20–2.50 per square foot all in. Material is usually less than half of it — the prep is the job.
What goes wrong on this job
- Order for the day you lay it. Sod on a pallet in July is composting by hour 36, and a heat-stressed pallet never fully recovers even after it roots.
- Water the graded soil before the sod arrives. Laying cool sod onto hot dry dirt burns the roots on contact, and you cannot see it happen until day four.
- Stagger the joints like brickwork and butt them tight. Gaps dry out from the edges, and every gap becomes a weed within a month.
- Roll it after laying, then water deeply enough to soak an inch into the soil beneath — not just the sod. Shallow watering keeps roots in the mat where they started.
- Measure twice on curves. The most common sod error is ordering off a rough rectangle and finding out at the last pallet that the bed edges ate 200 square feet.
