How much asphalt do I need?
One ton of hot-mix asphalt covers roughly 80 square feet at 2 inches compacted, 54 square feet at 3 inches, or 40 square feet at 4 inches. Those three numbers cover most residential work.
The formula: tons = length × width × (thickness ÷ 12) × 145 ÷ 2,000, where 145 lb/ft³ is the compacted density of standard hot mix.
Worked example: a driveway 60 ft × 12 ft at 3 inches is 720 sq ft × 0.25 ft = 180 cubic feet. At 145 lb/ft³ that is 26,100 lb, or 13.05 tons. Add 8% waste and you order about 14 tons.
Remember that thickness is the compacted figure. Hot mix is laid roughly 25% thicker than its final depth and rolled down, so a 3-inch finished surface goes down at about 3¾ inches loose.
How the calculation works
Volume in cubic feet = area × thickness ÷ 12. Weight = volume × density. Tons = weight ÷ 2,000.
Compacted hot-mix density runs 140–150 lb/ft³ depending on aggregate and mix design; 145 is the standard planning figure. Open-graded and porous mixes are lighter, around 130.
This calculates the asphalt only. A driveway also needs a compacted aggregate base — typically 4–8 inches of crushed stone under residential paving, more over soft subgrade. Budget that separately; it is often a third of the total job.
Typical asphalt paving cost, mid-2026
| Material | Unit | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Hot-mix asphalt (delivered) | per ton | $100 – $165 |
| Installed residential drivewayIncludes base, labour and rolling | per sq ft | $3.00 – $7.00 |
| Crushed stone base | per ton | $20.00 – $45.00 |
| Asphalt millings (recycled)Budget option for rural drives | per ton | $12.00 – $35.00 |
| Sealcoating | per sq ft | $0.15 – $0.35 |
| Tack coat | per gallon | $3.00 – $7.00 |
| Old surface removal | per sq ft | $1.00 – $3.00 |
Hot-mix pricing tracks crude oil and moves several times a year. Small loads under 10 tons often carry a surcharge, and most plants have a minimum order.
What goes wrong on this job
- Order slightly over and have somewhere to put the excess. Hot mix cannot wait — once a load cools below about 250°F it will not compact properly, so a shortfall cannot be fixed with a second delivery an hour later.
- The base matters more than the asphalt. Most failed driveways are base failures, not surface failures. Four inches of well-compacted crushed stone under 3 inches of asphalt outlasts 5 inches of asphalt over bad subgrade.
- Pave when it is warm. Below about 50°F the mix cools before it can be rolled, and you get a porous surface that fails at the first freeze-thaw cycle.
- Slope for drainage: at least ¼ inch per foot away from structures. Water standing on asphalt gets under the edges and undermines the base.
- Check the plant minimum before you design the job. Many will not run a batch under 5–10 tons, and a small job may need to be scheduled alongside a larger one.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet does a ton of asphalt cover?
About 80 sq ft at 2 inches compacted, 54 sq ft at 3 inches and 40 sq ft at 4 inches, using standard 145 lb/ft³ hot mix.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
Two to three inches of compacted asphalt over 4–6 inches of crushed stone base is standard for cars. Anything carrying delivery trucks or RVs should be 4 inches of asphalt over 8 inches of base.
How much does a ton of asphalt weigh in cubic yards?
One ton of compacted hot mix is roughly 0.51 cubic yards, since a cubic yard weighs about 3,915 lb at 145 lb/ft³.
Can I calculate asphalt in cubic yards instead of tons?
You can, but plants sell by weight. Multiply cubic yards by about 1.96 to get tons at standard density.
